After receiving Cabinet approval in July 2025, the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) was officially launched at Obuasi Black Park on 6th August 2025.

The programme marks a significant step in Ghana’s commitment to promoting sustainable and responsible small-scale mining. Spearheaded by the government in collaboration with key mining stakeholders, rCOMSDEP aims to formalize artisanal mining operations, improve environmental practices, and create alternative livelihood opportunities through structured skills training and cooperative development.

At the launch, government officials emphasized that rCOMSDEP is not merely a regulatory initiative but a developmental and empowerment agenda designed to transform small-scale mining communities. It will enhance capacity in modern mining techniques, environmental management, safety standards, and financial literacy empowering miners to operate responsibly while contributing meaningfully to local economies.

The event at Obuasi Black Park symbolized Ghana’s resolve to shift from illegal mining (“galamsey”) to a system that ensures community development, sustainability, and national benefit through responsible mining practices.
